Are
You Normal About Money?
by Bernice Kammer
Bloomberg Press, $12.95
When it comes
to money, are YOU normal?
Money
hardly mans the same thing to all of us. It never has. William
Somersat Maugham in Of Human Bondage likened it to "a sixth
sense without which you cannot make a complete use of the other
five." Way back in 42 B.C., Publius Syrus declared its importance:
"Money alone sets all the world in motion."
Making
moolah is important to more Americans today than ever before.
Bernice Kanner, known as a marketing diva, has drawn on exclusive
Bloomberg.com surveys and her industry sources on Madison Avenue
to expose our most furtive desires, wacky habits, and undiscovered
attitudes toward stuff we buy stuff with, moolah.
Here
are some of her findings:
Blessings:
If we
could have any luxury in the world, more of us would lavish money
on a butler or maid than on anything else.
Almost
90% of us, who have pets, buy them holiday gifts.
We spend
more money feeding our cars than feeding ourselves.
13%
of us almost always give to beggars.
Rifts
and Tears:
Its
the leading cause of disagreements in marriages - 44% of couples
say differences in spending styles could prompt them to call the
whole thing off.
Two
out of three swear they wouldn't sign a prenup.
One-fifth
of us have let a friendship dribble away over money.
In spite
of all the talk about equality, two out of five think that when
it comes to a date, it's the guy who should pay.
How
we strecth it:
Forty-percent
reuse the tinfoil.
How
we procure it:
40%
have stayed in a job they hate because of the money.
How
we Invest it:
38%
won't put their money in socially irresponsible companies.
How
we Save it:
Only
52% have savings outside of a work-related plan.
How
we Store it:
The
piggy bank is second to the glass jar!
How
we worry about it:
56% haven't been
able to sleep because of it.
