The Resume Commandments

Thou shalt not write about your past; thou shalt write about your future!
Thou shalt not confess. Stick to what’s relevant and marketable.
Thou shalt not write job descriptions; thou shalt write achievement statements.
Thou shalt not write about stuff you don’t want to do again. Promote best skills.
Thou shalt say less rather than more. Distill qualifications into a minimum of words.
Thou shalt not write in paragraphs; thou shalt use bullet points.(quick and easy)
Thou shalt not lie. Be creative, but always be honest.

Cover Letters that Connect

Think of your letter as the basis of the ideal script for the job interview you’ll have with the person to whom you’re writing. Let your letter indicate the following things:

What topic could break the ice at the beginning of the interview
What kind of personality you have
What types of things you have to talk about in your meeting
What you hope to get from the interview

If your cover letter can say these four things, it will make an employer start imagining that you and she are having a conversation. When she does that, she’ll be more apt to read your resume and then reach for the phone to call you for an interview.

Other tips:

Put together a business card that works like a “mini-resume.”
Showcase skills and experience (volunteer work) you might not think to include.
Search for a job even while in your current job.
Search and apply for jobs online!
Network to scout out the perfect new position.
