General George Patton's genius and his flaws are so closely intertwined that they are almost impossible to separate. Yet, he was tough, War is tough. Leaders have to be tough. He was a great military man, a consummate manager, and an inspirational example to his men. Mainly, he produced results. He was, in short, a superb manager.
This book will be published on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Patton's birthday.
There will be a leather bound edition, signed by Third Army members
The Preface is written by George Steinbrenner, owner of the NY Yankees.
A portion of the proceeds will go toward the WWII monument in DC.
A Sample of Patton's Maxims, A General's Dozen:
  • Do more than is required of you.
  • I want you to know that I do not judge the efficiency of an officer by the calluses on his butt.
  • When a decision has to be made, make it. There is no totally right time for anything.
  • Good tactics can save even the worst strategy, Bad tactics will destroy even the best strategy.
  • There is a great deal of talk about loyalty from the bottom line to the top. Loyalty from the top down is even more necessary and much less prevalent.
  • A staff cannot function properly unless it is a united family.
  • We can always learn from each other.
  • Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.
  • Keep a quick line of communications.
  • Success is how high you can bounce when you hit bottom.
  • Lack of orders is no excuse for inaction.
  • Moral courage is the most valuable characteristic and usually the most absent characteristic in men.
  • He never used his stars to cover his errors.
Based on the General's own writings, remarks, and Career record, author Alan Axelrod, who specializes in both military history and management topics, presents 185 succinct lessons in leadership, Patton-style.
This fascinating guide to business victory and personal excellence features a Foreword by William A, Cohen, Ph.D., Major General, USAFR, Retired; and a Preface by George Strengthener, principal owner of the New York Yankees. It will be available nationwide on Veteran's Day--which happens to be Patton's birthday.
Grounded in the convictions and achievements of a remarkable man, PATTON ON LEADERSHIP demonstrates how to tap into the power of a results-oriented philosophy. Packed with quotes from the General, along with anecdotes and observations, the book opens with a capsule history of Patton's life.
Born on November 11, 1995, George Smith Patton, Jr., was a frail but determined boy. After discovering he had dyslexia, Patton struggled to learn to read-and became an avid student and, later on in life, a powerful orator. He also excelled as a horseman, a swordsman, and an Olympic pentathlon athlete.
Braving the academic rigors of West Point, be graduated in 1909 with a second lieutenant's commission, and became the first U.S. officer to receive tank training. In 1942, he trained the pioneer generation of desert fighters. In January 1944, he took command of the Third Army, and led his men to unprecedented triumphs on the battlefields of World War 11.
A tribute to an extraordinary man and the consummate visionary, PATTON ON LEADERSHIP is an inspiring and pragmatic guide for corporate executives, entrepreneurs and all who are called to lead.
