Choosing the Business That’s Right for You: Using the Skills and Interests You Already Have

Necessary layoffs at Acxiom, Alltel, and other companies in Arkansas have eliminated jobs. If you’re one of those who have been “let go,” you face a number of important financial decisions. This sudden life style change could also present an opportunity for you. If you received severance pay, you are not only fortunate, but may be able to use some of that money toward setting yourself up in a business from home.

Making Money from Home was written for stay-at-home Moms, but the ideas can be used by men or women. Author, Liz Folger, says to first learn to avoid scams. Common ones include envelope stuffing, craft assembly, vending machines, coupon clipping, compiling mailing lists, and 900 numbers. Scams also abound on the internet. So, develop a sharp eye, and ask a lot of questions.

She profiles home businesses such as web designer, graphic artist, desktop publisher, accountant, massage therapist, proofreader/editor/writer, tutor, floral designer, travel agent, herb gardener, freelance photographer, child-care provider, alterations and sewing, caterer, pet-sitter, greeting card writer, information broker, wedding planner, soap maker, quilter, and gift baskets.

Most importantly Ms. Folger advocates you do enough soul searching and research to match your skills and interest to the right business for you. A way to start is with a list of your areas of interest. Reflect on what you enjoy doing and list your hobbies. When you visit a bookstore, what sections do you go to first? If you could get your degree all over again, what would it be in? Is there something you do that people compliment you on and have asked you to help them with? Find a niche and do your research.

She advises good marketing, accounting, and legal help. Excellent help is available statewide that you’ve already paid for with your tax dollars at:
